  1. The Cherry Hill books are all excellent books for horse owners. We purchased this particular title because it is written in simple laymen terms with super illustrated workds and explanation. The title may say “Horse Care for Kids” but we find it an excellent book to recommend to our miniature horse owners and to those who come through our Mini Boot Camp held two times per year in Austin, TX which teaches Equine Guided Interactions (EGI) so they can start up a 501c3 on their return to their community.

This book is really “Horse Care for people of all ages” – thank you Cherry Hill!

We bought this book for our daughter who owns a pony. She read it from cover to cover within 3 days and started implementing Cherry’s horse care immediately! She says she loves the book because it is very easy to understand what Cherry is saying. Things that may have been unclear to her are now understood. Thank you Cherry Hill! This book made our jobs easier!

At age 7 she didn’t want anything to do with horses. Only bunnies for 4H. Now at 11, she went riding 3 times last year and wants a horse. She joined a 4H horse group and needs to do a poster board. We checked out some books and bought this. It’s a keeper. She can now talk with confidence to kids who do own horses.

This is a well written book that contains all of the basics of safely caring for your first horse. It’s easy to read and understand, but doesn’t insult your intelligence. There are plenty of colorful illustrations too. I bought this for my 10 year old daughter who recently received her first horse and is enrolled in horse riding and ground work lessons. She loves it. I highly recommend this book.

I agree with the review from “From School Library Journal.” I did think that this book had excellent pictures and a lot of good information but did not think that it was complete.

The worming section particulary bothered me as it showed a picture of the worm lifecycle and said to “talk to your veterinarian.” Considering how much information there is about worming meds this should have been more detailed. I also would have liked the author to strongly stress that a horse buyer should have taken EXTENSIVE lessons before rushing out to buy a horse. A parent buying a horse for a child that doesn’t know the basics of horse care and riding (from working with read horses – not ones in books) is a recipe for danger and possibly disaster.

On a tangent, fans of the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls will be entertained with some of the photos as they appear to have come out of Riata’s own book.

People I’d recommend this book to: a fourth to sixth grade girl – I think that they’d love it as a first “serious” reference!
